Commencement Information

Graduate School degrees are awarded monthly; the Application for Degree must be turned in to One Stop Student Services, 200 Fraser Hall (East Bank) or 130 Coffey Hall (St. Paul) on or before the first working day of the intended month of graduation. For master's and certificate students, an e-mail notification will be sent to your University e-mail account by the third week of the month you applied to graduate regarding your graduation status. If you do not check your University of Minnesota assigned e-mail on a regular basis, you need to forward it to the account you check regularly. You can do this at https://www.umn.edu/dirtools External Link. Click on "Set E-mail Forwarding and Autoreply" and follow the instructions given. All other Graduate School requirements must be completed by the last working day of the intended month of graduation. Graduating in any month before the end of the term may affect your eligibility for student loans, housing, etc.; check with the appropriate office if you have questions. The award of the degree should appear on the transcript within two to three weeks following graduation. The diploma will be mailed from the Registrar's office four to six weeks after graduation. Graduate School commencement ceremonies are held in fall and spring terms. If you wish to participate in commencement, contact the Graduate School, 316 Johnston Hall, one term in advance of the ceremony. Attending a ceremony does not imply that you have officially graduated.
