| GRAD 999: A registration option for Graduate School students
GRAD 999 is a zero-credit, zero-tuition, non-graded registration option for those Graduate School students who must register solely to meet the Graduate School's fall/spring registration requirement. All registration deadlines and late fees will apply.
Use of GRAD 999: GRAD 999 is intended for Graduate School students who have completed all coursework and thesis credit requirements (if applicable) and must maintain registration to meet the Graduate School's fall and spring registration requirement. GRAD 999 will only maintain a student's active status in the Graduate School. GRAD 999 does not meet any other University or external agency’s requirements. Students who must maintain full-time status to hold an assistantship, defer loans, receive financial aid, etc. should not register for GRAD 999. For information regarding GRAD 999 and legal visa status, please see the section below regarding international students enrolling in GRAD 999.
Eligibility requirements: Graduate School students must hold active status and have been given departmental approval to be eligible for GRAD 999 registration.
Restrictions to GRAD 999 registration: The Graduate School does not restrict the number of terms for which students register for GRAD 999, nor does it impose any eligibility requirements other than those described above. However, individual graduate programs may establish their own criteria and are strongly encouraged to monitor their students' use of GRAD 999. Students should consult their individual graduate programs if they have questions regarding GRAD 999 registration restrictions.
International Students enrolled in GRAD 999:
Maintaining Legal Status: International students who enroll in GRAD 999 must file a Reduced Course Load Form (www.isss.umn.edu) and submit the completed form to the ISSS office in 190 HHH Center. International students interested in GRAD 999 are strongly encouraged to confer with ISSS prior to registering.
Maintaining Health Benefits: International students who register for GRAD 999 are required to maintain their University-sponsored health benefit plan. Students will automatically be enrolled in the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan unless they are covered by the Grad Continuation Plan, or they request and receive a waiver. To request a waiver, students must meet one of the following criteria: 1) They must be covered by a United States based employer-sponsored insurance plan, or 2) They must have returned to their home country and be in residence there for the duration of the semester. If students meet any of the above listed criteria, they need to contact the Student Health Benefits office for a waiver request at 612-624-0627 or studins@bhs.umn.edu. All waiver requests must be received by the University of Minnesota established registration deadlines.
How to register for GRAD 999: Graduate students can register for GRAD 999 online using the One Stop registration system (www.onestop.umn.edu). Students prompted to enter a permission number for GRAD 999 should contact The Graduate School at 612-625-3490 for advising. All registration deadlines and late fees will apply. To register, please use the following 5-digit class numbers.
Fall 2008: 26622
Spring 2009: 61982
How GRAD 999 will appear on the transcript: GRAD 999 will appear on The Graduate School student's record as "GRAD 999 Graduate School Active Status". There are no credits or grades for GRAD 999. A designator of "NG" will appear on the transcript indicating that no grade is assigned for this registration option.
GRAD 999 and the Student Services Fee: Students who register for GRAD 999 are not required to pay the Student Services fee; however, they may choose to do so. (Please be advised that those who pay the Student Services Fee must have their own health insurance to be covered when they use Boynton Health Service. Also, paying the Student Services Fee does not render students eligible to buy University-sponsored hospitalization insurance.)
Monitoring GRAD 999 registrations: Graduate School programs monitor students’ GRAD 999 registrations via the UM Report "GRAD 999 Enrollments". If a student exceeds his/her graduate program's limits for GRAD 999 registrations, the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) can request to have The Graduate School place a hold on the student's record. To make such a request, the DGS should send an email to gsasdean@umn.edu including the student’s name, ID number, and term the hold should be placed for.
