The Graduate School's fall commencement
Professor of nursing Mary Rowan, left, had the honor of hooding her daughter, Martha Boyer, at the Graduate School's fall commencement Dec. 12. Boyer received her Ph.D. in astrophysics.
More than 200 master's and doctoral candidates received their degrees in the ceremony at Northrop Memorial Auditorium in Minneapolis. Professor Rowan carried the mace, leading the faculty procession.
Frank Bates, Regents Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, gave the commencement address, "Advice from an Aging Warrior: What I Didn't Learn in Graduate School." He charged the graduates to embrace writing challenges, refine their oratory skills, do right, trust their instincts, and aim high. "Your graduate experience has prepared you to provide technical and intellectual leadership to your country and the international community," said Bates. "The world is much in need of your skills."

Posted on 10/9/2008 Doctoral students submitting their dissertations electronically are no longer required to submit a paper copy of the dissertation to the Graduate School and are now able to pay online. Posted on 8/18/2008 Effective September 1, 2008, the required publishing fee for doctoral dissertations will be increasing from $75 to $85. Doctoral students submitting dissertations after September 1st will be subject to the new $85 fee.
